count. On some of those occasions, his playing, while
always good, was a bit sloppy. Little things
part of live music. Friday was a totally different
story. I don't know if he just has a renewed sense of
him play. The band was tight, spot on with all of the
material and seemed to be having a great time.
The night started off with "Rip It Out", right in to
"Hard Times" and then straight into "Parasite". I was
so into the quality of the musicianship that I
felt just a giddy as when I first saw him 14 years ago
at Grafitti's in Pittsburgh. We hear tons of great
KISS classics like "Deuce", "Strange ways",
"Shout It Out Loud", and "Love Gun" as well as some
awesome solo material like "Rock Soldiers", "NY
Groove" (yes with the light up guitar), and "Snow
blind" just to name a few. He also did some songs in
medley form, combining "Torpedo Girl", "Five Card
Stud", "Speeding Back To My Baby", "Trouble Walking"
and "I Want You". I also need to give honorable
mention to a sizzling rendition of
"Into The Void" from the Psycho Circus CD. He brought
down the house with "2000 Man", and his trademark tune
"Shock Me", sent us into orbit with "Rocket
Ride" and ended the night on a perfect note with "Cold
Gin". I think that is most of the set list and while I
could have listened to him play everything
from his repertoire, I couldn't have asked for a
better grouping of tunes. He sang about 75% of the
material with his drummer and bassist taking vocals on
the rest. If I had to say there was one downside
(aside from not catching a guitar pick), it would be
that he didn't have the smoke bomb guitar during his
absolutely ripping, yet very classic guitar solo. I
think I read somewhere recently that it malfunctioned
so it is probably in the Gibson Custom shop being work
on. A small price to pay for a killer night of
fantastic hard rock music.
Let me tell you, I have always been an Ace fan but
after Friday I have a totally recharged love for this
guy as a musician. I can't wait for the new solo album
to get released and if he tours to support it I'll be
right back there, front and center for his show again.
